Position: Yard Switcher

Job Description:

Forward Air Solutions is looking for a capable and dedicated individual to work as a Yard Switcher. The Yard switcher should be able to comfortably operate a semi-truck with a trailer and/or yard tractors/mules, to move trailers in and out of dock doors or around the truck yard. The candidate must be able to back tractor and trailers up to dock doors, often with other trailers on either side of the dock. In addition, he/she may have to use other warehouse equipment, such as pallet jacks, manual jacks, and forklifts. The Yard switcher should also know how to perform pre- and post-trip inspections on tractors and trailers. This position is not a driving only position. This position also entails handling cargo within the warehouse between the trailer switches.

Hours: The candidate will work a 2nd shift schedule with some 3rd shift responsibilities. 2nd shift will have a tentative schedule of Sunday-Thursday with tentative hours of 10am until completion.

Core Responsibilities & Duties:

  • When not actively making trailer moves, you will work on the dock in support of unload and load operations.
  •  Responsible for the movement and spotting of trailers to facilitate the needs of the warehouse in sorting and processing material for shipment or storage
  •  Responsible for timely movements and knowledge of on-hand inventory
  •  Responsible to maintain a neat and orderly storage lot oriented toward maximizing efficiency in servicing the facility’s needs
  •  Operate yard truck in a safe manner
  •  Drive and operate vehicle under 15 mph in and around facility
  •  Conduct pre-trips on trailers before placing in doors
  •  Must function and interact on a daily basis with facility personnel and comply with facility safety requirements
  •  Communicate using cellular telephone or 2-way radio with dispatch
  •  Security of valuable commodities and the storage area itself are a major area of concern for the yard switcher, occasionally requiring guidance from supervisory personnel regarding


  • Safe truck and trailer operating skills are required
  • Experience with backing 53 foot trailers
  • A current Class A Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) is preferred, however, verifiable experience will be considered.


  • Ideal candidate will possess a “can do” attitude with a “will do” work ethic
  • Must be innovative, confident and energetic 
  • Detail oriented; practices good judgment in decision making
  • Ability to communicate effectively verbally and in writing
  • Knowledge of professional social media platforms
  • Self-motivated; ability to operate under solid pressure and meet tight deadlines
  • Expert capabilities in programs including but not limited to: Word, Excel and PowerPoint
