Dock Lead

Position: Dock Lead

Job Description:

Forward Air Solutions is looking for a capable and dedicated individual to work as an Operations (Dock / Sort) lead. The qualified candidate will coordinate all activities of dockworkers on a manual small package / retail sort distribution system.  The lead will provide planning for, direction to, and will control available resources associated with the timely, damage-free, and safe loading/unloading of freight on assigned shifts supporting both company and customer KPI’s. In addition, the lead will provide dockworker training, performance feedback, and provide disciplinary recommendations when necessary. Previous experience with small package or retail sort operation is mandatory. Frequent lifting, pulling, pushing, and carrying of freight, up to 50 lbs., are required.

  Core Responsibilities & Duties:

  • Ensure all dock and yard work is performed according to Forward Air approved procedures, standards, and specifications for sort operations.
  • Ensure that production levels are planned and met for continuous improvement. 
  • Directly supervise, coach, train, mentor and provide feedback and accountability on all activities of dock workers engaged in loading, palletizing and unloading trailers
  • Assign job tasks to workers according to unloading and loading schedules
  • Maintain appropriate load plans
  • Coordinate work assignments, monitor performance, and provide training on relevant job duties
  • Provide a clean, safe working environment for all personnel and visiting customers
  • Foster safe handling, loading, unloading, and storage as provided by the Department of Transportation  
  • Other duties as assigned


  • Must have management experience (3-5 years preferred), in a high-volume, fast distribution environment
  • Previous Retail sort experience (UPS or FedEx Ground) is a plus
  • Bachelor’s degree or higher in Management, Logistics, or Industrial Engineering preferred
  • Interest in long-term career development through assignments in multiple facilities across the nation
  • Ability to handle changing priorities and use good judgment in stressful situations
  • Must possess demonstrated leadership ability
  • Knowledge of proper freight handling techniques
  • Ability to communicate effectively with all levels of operations
  • Knowledge of Department of Transportation (DOT) rules and regulations
  • Experience with a contingent workforce during peak seasons
  • Must be able to frequently lift and/or move up to fifty (50) pounds.
  • All cargo handler positions Part-Time to start with the opportunity to be promoted to full-time based on performance (merit)
